BrinkMann--sorry for the confusion, I just would have figured that the date on the post (and the info, since Apple TV Betas are now out for Boxee) would have indicated that this was out of date. I may go ahead and put a disclaimer at the beginning of the page for any other intrepid Googlers!

Hope everything goes well with your reinstall. I haven't been happy with the Boxee performance on my Apple TV in the Beta, which is why I went to XBMC instead. Hulu performance through XBMC blows Boxee out of the water (using bluecop's repository Hulu plugin) but sadly, Hulu is changing the way their streams work and the plugin is almost dead in the water until a new solution comes along. Sad. :-(

I'll be posting more on here again, as I have much more free time thanks to switching jobs in the fall (no more 60 hour weeks!) so I fully plan on talking more about my Apple TV hacking adventures. I hope you'll follow along and chime in about your own experiences!

Best,
Jess

Oh, okay. Big "oops" on that one I guess.

Actually, I did use aTV Flash originally before happening upon this site and utilizing the hack mentioned above, in order to update Firefox and Silverlight as mentioned. For others considering doing the same, here is some crucial knowledge I've acquired through the experience:

1) aTV installs a much older version of Firefox (2.x), and does NOT update it to anything newer via the update tools installed. Instead, it utilizes an older ftp server/url on the Fire Core website and simply downloads 2.x again whenever attempts to upgrade or re-install are made. (Version 2.x of Mozilla Firefox will not run current versions of Silverlight, and - as current versions of Silverlight are required to run anything even approaching Netflix, no exception - this places the possibility of utilizing Netflix via the native aTV install in the category of non-existent.)
2) By ftp-ing/ssh-ing into the Apple TV (this is Gen 1 we're talking about, just to remind everyone), one CAN drag over Silverlight files and folders to their "proper" locations on the ATV hard drive; but (again, in my own experience) this still proved unsuccessful in getting Silverlight to run, both before and after the successful installation of Firfox 3.6.
3) The above hack DOES install a newer version of Firefox and Silverlight (along with XBMC and Boxee), but (depending on the success of the install) for some users, Silverlight may still not run, and some functionality of the aTV-install (and update) of Boxee may be lost.

I realize this is an "at your own risk" area of the world out here, and that - as such - all risk and result should be squarely shouldered by the "risker"; and I would never "blame" anyone for what I choose to do to my own equipment under such conditions. But, conversely, I don't think I'm alone in the appreciation of a good, old-fashioned caveat or warning posted at the beginning of such tutorials either. Just food for thought.

At least my post (way down here at the bottom of the page) might stand as some kind of red flag for others still landing at this info and considering using it; and with more info in the post preceding this one, outlining the details to perhaps avoid.

That said, thanks for the contribution(s) in this area - I've learned a lot.

Off to restore and "start from scratch",

Hi BrinkMann,

I honestly don't know what you can do, I am sorry. This post is over a year old and no longer the method you need to get the Boxee Beta installed on your Apple TV. This was a stopgap measure for before the official Apple TV version was released by Boxee. At the time you could only install the Mac version this way.

I don't know if the guy who wrote the script even has it up to date anymore. I have actually stopped using Boxee because I got sick of the freezing, lags, and other issues I was experiencing in the early beta software. If I were you, I might try downloading the current ATV beta from the Boxee site and installing the proper way with that, not following these temporary instructions. Hopefully that will clear up your issues. If not, it really isn't that big a deal to do a factory restore and start from scratch. I have done it plenty of times.

So, regarding JUST the Boxee-Beta update of ATV (and not the tweaks):
Followed your instructions exactly as posted, ran smart installer, rebooted, re-logged in to "new" Boxee install with no problem; but now none of my apps work properly???
Pandora... can't log in (with correct un/pw)
LiveTV... won't connect to individual channels

...seems all Boxee connectivity has been lost.

...all was working before the sh install.

Mainly wanted to get a newer version of Firefox running with a functional and accepted version of silverlight - yet even that hasn't worked; firefox 3.6 installed, but silverlight still not recognized by sites such as Netflix. (yes, cache and cookies purged)

So...
Was wondering if there is an "uninstall" process to reverse the above-posted sh changes to my ATV???
Only alternative I see at this point is continuing to try to get old versions of Boxee still on the ATV to somehow come back (still haven't gotten that to work, though); and - barring that - reinstall entire OS ...what a notion... i.e. no way.
Looking for help,
Thanks

The first instruction for SSH..says "Run each line as a command, one at a time.

    wget -m -nd http://www.green-light.ca/cmn_external/app/boxee/beta/BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh
    sudo sh BoxeeBetaInstallScript.sh latest
    sudo reboot now

-----------------

IS there 4 lines..or 3...it's NOT clear.
This can be confusing as the first command wraps on the page.

Works great, thanks!

My hulu though is unusable for the most part. One frame every 2 seconds or so (full audio though, odd..)

How well is your Hulu on ATV working? Am I encountering an issue or is everyone seeing the same thing?

Well, after the second step of attempting to change the skiploop filter, after Control+X, then Y, then Enter -- the error message reads "could not open file for writing: no such file or directory"
